Vol. 521 No. 6

Written Answers. - Veterinary Services.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

45 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a shortage of veterinary staff to carry out inspections is now preventing a substantial number of abattoirs from gaining an export licence; the plans, if any, he has to propose new measures to ensure that this problem is tackled; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The policy of controlling civil servant numbers is an important aspect of Government policy to control public expenditure. Accordingly, my Department is obliged to carry out its functions based on a fixed number of staff.

My Department must prioritise its resources to ensure the most effective delivery of services to the public. I am aware of the pressure being put on our veterinary services at present and I am ensuring that veterinary numbers are maintained at the maximum allowed under current policy.
