493 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on the treatment of a person (details supplied) in County Galway who visited the accident and emergency unit of University College Hospital, Galway, on 16 June 2000; the reason this person, who was suffering from severe headaches, could not be treated in a more humane and sympathetic way; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Health and Children (Mr. Martin):

The provision of medical treatment to eligible persons in County Galway in this instance is the statutory responsibility of the Western Health Board. My Department has asked the chief executive officer of the board to investigate the position in relation to this case and to reply to the Deputy directly.
