Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Signage.

Charles Flanagan

Ceist:

667 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will address an apparent contradiction in respect of roads policy where speed limit signs are exhibited in miles and distance signs in kilometres, causing confusion for many motorists; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19437/00]

Road signs showing distances in imperial measurements have been replaced on all national roads and are being progressively replaced on the more extensive non-national road network. Metrication of speed limits, is in principle, desirable for consistency with road distance signs and general national and EU policies in favour of metrication. Such a change will, however, have to be managed so as not to compromise road safety or the important targets in this regard set by the Government strategy on road safety 1998-2002. A working group of relevant agencies, chaired by my Department, is to recommend on the implementation of metricated speed limits.
