Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Network.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

712 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the status of proposals to upgrade the R311 road from Castlebar to Derrycoosh cross roads; if he has received a copy of these proposals; if he has had considerations made into these; the cost of this upgrading; if he has allocated any moneys towards the project; if Mayo County Council has applied to him for funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20551/00]

No application for funding has been received in my Department to upgrade the road from Castlebar to Derrycoosh crossroads, R311. However, under the 2000 EU co-financed specific improvement grants scheme, my Department allocated £100,000 to the R311 Newport Road at Snugborough for pavement strengthening and improvement. I understand this section of road would coincide with the eastern end of the road line referred to in the question.

It will be open to Mayo County Council to prioritise this project, having regard to compliance with the eligibility criteria, for funding under the 2001 EU co-financed specific improvement grants scheme when applications are sought by my Department from local authorities under this scheme shortly.
