714 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans he has to upgrade the capacity of the sewage treatment works at Castlebar, County Mayo; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that these works are now seriously overextended; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that sludge from the Derrinamara landfill at Newport, County Mayo, has also to be treated at this plant; if pollution has occurred on the Castlebar river on several occasions in 2000; the cost of expansion of the treatment works; the plans he has to make funding available in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Castlebar environs sewerage scheme, estimated to cost £15 million, has been included in my Department's water and sewerage services investment programme 2000-02 to commence construction in 2002. Mayo County Council's proposals for the appointment of consultants for the preparation of contract documents for the scheme were approved in February 1999. I understand the scope of the preliminary report approved in 1997 is being reviewed by the council and its proposals concerning the extent of the scheme, in relation to both the collection and treatment systems, are awaited by my Department. An advance section of the scheme, between Marian Row and Linenhall Street, was completed last year.
715 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received an application for funding for a sewerage system (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20554/00]
A preliminary report on a sewerage scheme to serve Ticknevin was submitted to my Department in 1988 but was not approved. The proposal was not included in the recent list of projects submitted by Kildare County Council in response to the Department's request to local authorities to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessment. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the water services investment programme, 2000-02, announced in July.

The Castledermot sewerage scheme is among the schemes approved for funding under the rural towns and villages initiative. Contract documents for the scheme were approved last July and the submission of tenders is now awaited from Kildare County Council. The contract documents, as approved, do not include the area referred to in the Deputy's question.
718 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the present situation concerning an application from Westmeath County Council for approval to appoint consultants to design a sewerage and surface water plan for the Robinstown area at Mullingar, County Westmeath; and when it will be approved. The Mullingar sewerage improvement scheme, which incorporates the Robinstown area, has been included in the water services investment programme, 2000-02, to advance through planning. The brief for the appointment of consultants was approved on 22 September 2000.
