Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

841 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress, if any, in relation to the promised works to be undertaken at the drawbridge, Milford, County Carlow; the amount of funds allocated to the work; and the expected completion date. [19911/00]

Waterways Ireland, a North-South implementation body for inland waterways, was established on 2 December 1999, on foot of the British-Irish Agreement and the supplementary Implementation Bodies Agreement signed in March 1999. It has the functions of management, maintenance, development and restoration of certain inland navigable waterways systems throughout the island, principally for recreational purposes.

Although the matter is now one for consideration by Waterways Ireland, I can inform the Deputy that design work for the bridge is in progress, and that Waterways Ireland expect to be in a position to invite tenders shortly with a view to installation by the end of this year. The allocation for this project is of the order of £25,000.
