Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

842 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the procedure, system and resources used in her Department for replying to correspondence from Members of the Oireachtas; the staff numbers involved; if the numbers have been reduced since freedom of information requests were introduced; if staff were diverted to freedom of infor mation cases; if a tracking or follow up system exists; if there is a rule or guideline for sending replies other than acknowledgements; the standard in this regard; the way in which it is monitored; her views on whether responding to requests from Oireachtas Members is an integral part of the democratic system; and if she has any proposals to improve this service. [20053/00]

I assure the Deputy that correspondence from Members of the Oireachtas is dealt with as expeditiously as possible by my private office, as is all correspondence received. All members of my staff are required, as an integral part of their duties, to deal promptly with queries, both written and verbal, from Members of the Oireachtas. Staff numbers in my office have not been reduced since the Freedom of Information Act was enacted; matters arising under that legislation are dealt with by a separate section of my Department. My office uses a computerised ministerial representations tracking system provided by Central IT Services, Department of Finance, which has inbuilt monitoring and follow-up checking systems.

All representations are acknowledged and progress in issuing substantive replies to outstanding representations is reviewed in the course of my meetings with the Department's management committee which occur every two to three weeks.

If the Deputy has any particular complaint in mind, I will have it dealt with as quickly as possible if he arranges to bring it to my attention.

Michael Ahern

Ceist:

843 Mr. M. Ahern asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the names and addresses of all persons appointed to State bodies, semi-State boards and all other institutions under the aegis of her office during the period 16 December 1994 to 26 June 1997. [20101/00]

The information requested by the Deputy is set out as follows. I understand the Deputy's office confirmed that the full addresses of the appointees was not necessary, but that the county would suffice.
