Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Live Register.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

161 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Taoiseach the categories of information available to him of those signing on the live register; the locations by county where they are signing on; and the numbers who are long-term unemployed, recently unemployed and others. [20519/00]

The CSO's monthly live register statement gives the number of persons signing on the live register on the last Friday of each month, with a breakdown by gender, age group – under and over 25, category of claimant – unemployment benefit, unemployment assistance and others, and by region. The monthly statement also contains tables on groups outside the live register, such as persons working on systematic short-time, those on the farm-assist scheme, self-employed persons claiming unemployment assistance and persons on pre-retirement schemes, PRETA and PRECS.

The figures are compiled by the CSO from returns made by each local office of the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs.

The CSO also publishes a monthly analysis of the flows onto and off the live register and a breakdown of the figures by county and social welfare office, distinguishing 125 local offices.

A more detailed age breakdown, with an analysis by duration of continuous registration, is compiled every six months in respect of April and October. The figures for April 2000 showed that there were 63,600 people signing on for one year or longer.

I have made arrangements to send the latest copies of the relevant CSO releases to the Deputy.
