Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Asylum Seekers.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

907 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received an appeal from a person (details supplied) for permission to stay here on humanitarian grounds; if the appeal is being processed; and, if so, when a decision is likely. [19922/00]

The person referred to applied for asylum on 20 January 2000. Her claim was assessed following an interview on 17 February 2000 and was deemed to be manifestly unfounded. She was informed of this in writing on 16 March 2000. She appealed this decision through her legal representatives on 24 March and the independent Appeals Authority decided to uphold the decision to find the application manifestly unfounded. The person referred to was informed of this decision in writing on 12 July 2000. In informing her of this decision, the person referred to was informed that it was proposed to make a deportation order in respect of her and affording her the opportunity to either leave the State voluntarily, consent to a deportation order or make representations in writing as to why she should not be deported.

Representations were received subsequently from her legal representatives and these will be considered in the context of the examination of her case under the provisions of section 3(6) of the Immigration Act, 1999.

In view of the large number of cases on hands at the present time, I am unable to state when a decision will be reached on the matter.
