Ceist:

918 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps he will take to allocate additional Garda personnel to the Rathwire, Killucan and Raharney areas of County Westmeath in view of the fact this area is rapidly increasing in population terms; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20065/00]

The Rathwire, Killucan and Raharney area of County Westmeath is policed by Killucan Garda station. The current manpower strength of Killucan Garda station is two (all ranks).

Indictable crimes reported for Killucan between 1996 and 1999 are outlined hereunder:

*Figures for 1999 are provisional/operational and relate to January to September only.
These figures show a significant drop in reported crime.
There are three community alert schemes in operation in the area.
An official Garda patrol van was allocated to Killucan station in December 1999. Resources are augmented from within the district as required. The situation will be kept under review and when additional manpower next becomes available the needs of the Killucan sub-district will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
