Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

990 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve the application by a school (details supplied) in County Wexford for two permanent teachers, commencing the next academic term, to cater for children with special learning needs. [19408/00]

The school referred to by the Deputy had the services of a resource teacher based in the school and shared with six other schools in the area.

Arising from an investigation conducted by my Department's inspectorate, arrangements relating to resource teacher support for children with special needs in the area have now been revised. The case load of the resource teacher attached to the school to which the Deputy refers has now been reduced and that teacher is now catering only for children in the school in question and one other school. Alternative arrangements have been put in place to address the special needs of children attending other schools in the area. The authorities of the school in question have been advised of the new arrangements.

John Gormley

Ceist:

991 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give details of his response to the concerns raised by the Scoil Mochua Parents Association in its letter to him of 14 June 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19423/00]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that, in response to the concerns raised by the Scoil Mochua Parents Association, my Department sanctioned a second full-time remedial post to the school with effect from 1 September 2000. In addition, in April 2000, a full-time resource teacher post was allocated to support children with special needs attending the school.
