1011 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny required a H.Dip qualification to teach French at Presentation Convent, Kilkenny where she has taught for ten years in a temporary capacity; and the further reason a H.Dip qualification is required in a voluntary school but not in a community school. The Registration Council is the statutory body which determines, with the approval of the Minister for Education and Science, the qualification requirements for the purposes of recognition as a secondary teacher. In order to be recognised as a teacher in a voluntary secondary school, a person is required to hold both a suitable degree or equivalent and a suitable training-in-teaching qualification. The higher diploma in education or equivalent satisfies the training-in-teaching requirement. In order to be appointed as a teacher in a community school a person is required to hold the higher diploma in education or equivalent in addition to a suitable primary degree or equivalent.
