Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

1054 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the possibility of increasing remedial teaching hours in a school (details supplied) in County Cork. [20215/00]

In September, 1999 the remedial teaching service was extended to all primary schools with a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 or above. Schools with lower pupil teacher ratios were advised that they could seek remedial support where they could demonstrate a need for such a service.

A further fifteen remedial teacher posts were sanctioned in the current school year to improve the remedial service in schools with very high enrolments.

The school referred to by the Deputy has a remedial teaching service and the pupils in question have access to this service. The school also has the services of a resource teacher. I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the school in question will be fully considered in the event of additional resources becoming available to improve existing remedial services.
