Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

1057 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps he will take to ensure that Milltown national school, Mullingar, County Westmeath, which recently lost a teacher due to being only one pupil short, has the teacher restored immediately; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20287/00]

As the Deputy is aware the staffing of primary schools is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with guidelines agreed between this Department and the education partners.

The enrolment at Milltown national school has decreased from 90 pupils on 30 September 1998 to 82 pupils on 30 September 1999. This latter enrolment warrants the staffing of a principal and two mainstream class teachers for the 2000-01 school year. The school also has the services of a learning support teacher.
