1119 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will extend the school transport service for a person (details supplied) in view of the fact that there are serious family difficulties and taking into consideration the safety concerns of the children which have been substantiated by their doctor and the school principal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. A report on the matter has been requested from Bus Éireann and an application for transport on medical grounds has been forwarded to the parent concerned for completion. The Deputy will be informed of the outcome as soon as possible.
1120 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will extend the school bus service to a home pick up in view of the fact that this person (details supplied) in County Sligo is attending Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Dublin 12, with a kidney disorder; if he will make a favourable decision as the bus driver advises that he has no difficulties with extending the service considering the extenuating circumstances; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The medical evidence submitted by the Deputy has been forwarded to the medical adviser for a recommendation. The Deputy will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.

1122 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will intervene on behalf of a person (details supplied) and have the school bus re-routed in view of the safety concerns due to fatal accidents in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20654/00]
The position generally is that school transport services are organised as a network of main routes serving post-primary schools. Pupils living off main routes are expected to get, or be brought to a convenient pick-up point on the main route. As a rule, the routes are planned so that no pupil should have more than three miles to travel to a pick-up point.
