Vol. 523 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

224 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the current position in relation to the provision of extra facilities required at Rathmore national school, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20805/00]

Architectural planning is proceeding for the provision of an extension at Rathmore national school, County Kildare. The school authorities will be kept informed of progress.

Ceist:

225 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of primary schools in County Kildare awaiting the provision of extra facilities; the plans he has to meet these requirements in the near future; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20806/00]

The information relating to the number of projects requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department. My Department receives applications for extra facilities from primary schools nationwide, including Kildare, on an ongoing basis.

The rate of progress to construction for capital projects depends on factors such as the complexity and size of the project, site issues, the time required to undertake architectural planning, the volume of other projects being dealt with by design teams and by the planning and building unit of my Department, the period of time required for the granting of planning permission and a fire certificate and the outcome of the tender competition. These processes are by their nature complex and can take a considerable period of time to complete. Delays can arise at any point in the process. Consequently, it is not possible to say when projects being processed will proceed to construction. Every effort is made, however, by my Department to minimise delays and to ensure construction is started in the shortest period of time possible. In all cases, the school authorities are informed of progress on individual projects.
