Vol. 523 No. 2

Written Answers. - Assisted Human Reproduction.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

147 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has initiated an investigation into the impact on Ireland of recent moves in Britain on human cloning; and if his Department has been in contact with the Commission on Assisted Human Reproduction on the matter. [19465/00]

The Commission on Assisted Human Reproduction has been advised that it will need to consider the issue of human cloning in the context of preparing its report on the possible approaches to the regulation of all aspects of associated human reproduction and the social, ethical and legal factors to be taken into account in determining public policy in the area.

In considering the various issues, including that of human cloning, there is an onus on the commission to seek submissions from the public and to consult appropriately with relevant interested parties including those in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. The commission's report will provide the basis for informed public debate prior to the bringing forward of policy proposals on the matter.
