Vol. 523 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

John Gormley

Ceist:

193 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason the Criminal Assets Bureau has not used its extensive powers to deal with those guilty of white collar crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20764/00]

The statutory remit of the Criminal Assets Bureau is set out in sections 4 and 5 of the Criminal Assets Bureau Act, 1996.

The predominance of bureau actions have been taken against persons suspected of drug trafficking, including laundering the suspected proceeds of drug trafficking. However, cases involving suspected involvement in illegal animal growth promoters, fraud, living off immoral earnings, corruption, receiving stolen property, aggravated burglaries, murder and tax fraud have also been taken.
