Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Credit Union Savings Tax.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

255 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Finance if his discussions with the Irish League of Credit Unions have been finalised in relation to the question of taxation of savings; if so, when these are likely to come into effect; if they will they be backdated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23319/00]

I met the Irish League of Credit Unions on 3 and 6 October 2000 to discuss the taxation arrangements for credit unions. At the meeting on 6 October, it was agreed these discussions could form the basis of an agreement for new taxation arrangements for the credit union movement. The Irish League of Credit Unions is consulting its members at present on this issue and I am not, therefore, in a position to comment further on the ultimate outcome of the discussions to date.
