Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Accommodation.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

144 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Defence the plans that are in place for the refurbishment of living quarters within the Defence Forces; if he has satisfied himself with the current standard of such accommodation and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22994/00]

Over the last two years, approximately £33 million has been spent on building projects and maintenance works designed to upgrade operational, living and recreational accommodation for members of the Defence Forces. Over the next three years, 2000-2002, a further £100 million is expected to be spent on a continuation of that programme.

Recent major accommodation projects included a new NCOs' mess in Finner Camp, costing £840,000, and refurbishment works to quarters in the naval base costing £260,000. Work is currently in progress on refurbishment of billet blocks, Clarke Barracks, Curragh and the construction of a new NCOs' mess, Collins Barracks, Cork, at an estimated cost of £2.6 million.

In next year's building programme, the following major projects are due to commence:
