Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

Conor Lenihan

Ceist:

164 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Taoiseach if the rate of decline in unemployment in the Dublin 24 area has been faster than anywhere else; and if this rate of decline is also reflected in the figures for those categorised as long-term unemployed in Dublin 24. [23117/00]

Ceist:

165 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Taoiseach if unemployment has fallen faster in the area of Tallaght, Dublin 24, than in any other area of the city and county of Dublin; and if he will give percentage comparisons between the different Dublin postal districts. [23118/00]

Ceist:

166 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Taoiseach if he will give a breakdown of the unemployment figures for the Tallaght area or the Dublin 24 postal district area. [23119/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 164, 165 and 166 together.

The exact information requested by the Deputy is not available. Statistics on employment and unemployment are compiled, at a regional level, from the quarterly national household survey. The latest statistics show that there were 19,000 people classified as unemployed in the Dublin region in the March-May quarter of 2000, compared with 25,400 in the corresponding quarter of 1999. This represents an annual fall of just over 25%. Sub-regional statistics, of the kind requested by the Deputy, are not available from the quarterly national household survey.

The live register series gives a monthly breakdown of the number of people claiming unemployment assistance, unemployment benefit and other claimants registered with the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs. Figures are published for each county and each local social welfare office. A breakdown by postal district is not available.

While the live register provides a regular monthly series, it is not an accurate measure of unemployment, as it includes part-time workers, who may work up to three days per week, seasonal and casual workers who are to unemployment assistance or benefit.

The live register figures for each social welfare office in Dublin in September 1999 and 2000 are set out in the following table:
