Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Harbours And Piers.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

180 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the position regarding the proposed dredging of Burtonport Harbour, County Donegal. [23199/00]

The dredging of Burtonport harbour is being undertaken by Donegal County Council with financial assistance from my Department. Phase one of the works was completed last year at a cost of more than £230,000.

Further financial assistance of up to £750,000 was made available to Donegal County Council by my Department in 1999, and again in 2000, for the dredging works. The local authority has applied to my Department for a dumping at sea licence for the dredged material and its application is currently being processed. The county council has now advised that, following objections from local groups, it will not be in a position to undertake the works until next year at the earliest.
