Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Equipment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

201 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself that all military vehicles, aircraft and seagoing vessels are sufficiently equipped in terms of modern technology and support facilities to meet any requirement or obligation imposed upon them arising from emergencies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23351/00]

I am satisfied that all military vehicles, Air Corps aircraft and Naval Service ships are well equipped in terms of modern technology and support facilities. This enables the Army, Air Corps and Naval Service meet any requirements or obligations that arise in normal circumstances and in situations arising from emergencies.

The White Paper on Defence sets out a very positive, developmental approach to defence in Ireland for the next ten years. It involves a new, unprecedented £250 million investment programme in equipment and infrastructure. This programme will ensure that Ireland has a modern, sustainable defence organisation, second to none, with the depth and flexibility to respond to future demands.

202 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself that all naval vessels are in a sufficiently high state of seaworthiness; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23352/00]

Through frequent inspections and dockyard maintenance, all Naval Service ships are maintained to a high state of seaworthiness to enable the Naval Service carry out all their assigned tasks.

The Government is committed to continuous investment in the equipment needs of the Naval Service to carry out its roles. In December 1999, the LE Róisín was commissioned and is now active on fishery protection patrols. Last April, I signed a contract for the construction of a further vessel, similar to LE Róisín, which is expected to be completed in the middle of next year. The second new ship will replace LE Deirdre as it approaches the end of its economic life.

The total cost of these vessels will represent investment of about £44 million. Older vessels of the fleet have been extensively overhauled as part of an ongoing programme in recent years and this programme will be completed this year with the refit of LE Ciara and LE Orla.

203 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself as to the airworthiness of all security aircraft, helicopters and fixed wing craft; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23353/00]

I am satisfied that all Air Corps aircraft, fixed wing and rotary, flying on operational duties are maintained to a high state of air worthiness which enables them to carry out all the tasks assigned to them.

Air Corps aircraft are subject to a very strict maintenance regime. Maintenance is carried out, as required, in line with the standard manufacturer's maintenance manual of each aircraft. In addition, all aircraft meet the certification standards laid down by the relevant aviation authorities.

The Deputy is aware that the Government recognise that there are urgent equipment requirements in the Air Corps. In recognition of these urgent requirements, I was pleased to announce on 1 March 2000 the allocation of up to £55 million over the next three years for that purpose. These funds will initiate vital investment in new aircraft for the Air Corps.
