The Government Strategy for Road Safety 1998-2002 was underpinned by a range of road safety research analyses, national and inter national. In addition, the strategy envisaged the carrying out of further such research as detailed in the reply to Question No. 701 of 7 November 2000.
In relation to road safety engineering, the principal relevant work pre-dating to the road safety strategy is contained in A Guide to Road Safety Engineering in Ireland, published by the Department of the Environment and Local Government in 1996. Since the publication of the strategy, and in line with its commitments, the National Roads Authority, NRA, has undertaken safety audits and checks of certain lengths of the national road network. NRA is also now evaluating the benefits of certain low cost accident counter-measures which have been in place for some time on the national network.
