Vol. 525 No. 4

Written Answers. - Nursing Staff.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

92 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will again look at the case of a student nurse (details supplied) in County Waterford. [25276/00]

As the Deputy is aware, the individual in question was a self funded student public health nurse during the 1999-2000 academic year. She was employed as a temporary public health nurse with the South Eastern Health Board on completion of her course.

I have made inquiries concerning this case following previous representations by the Deputy. I have been advised that the South Eastern Health Board is at present looking at the position of all temporary public health nurses employed within the board's area in the light of my Department's circular 85/2000 concerning revised arrangements for the sponsorship of student public health nurses. A meeting has been arranged with a representative of the INO and this will take place shortly. It is hoped that following this meeting, and further discussions with the directors of public health nursing in the board's area, that the position of the nurse concerned will be clarified.

The South Eastern Health Board recognises the contribution made by temporary public health nurses in the past and is endeavouring to have the situation resolved as soon as possible.
