Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Real IRA.

John Bruton

Ceist:

157 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the communications he has had with the US Government with regard to proposals that the Real IRA be designated as a terrorist organisation under the relevant United States legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25638/00]

The Irish and British Governments are at one in their determination to take every practical measure possible against organisations such as the Real IRA.

I am currently considering, in consultation with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, whether there would be a net practical advantage in the two Governments together requesting the US authorities to consider designating the Real IRA as a foreign terrorist organisation under the relevant US legislation. The advice of the Garda Commissioner and the RUC Chief Constable has been sought, and I expect to have further consultations with the Secretary of State as soon as possible.
