Vol. 526 No. 3

Written Answers. - Victims Commission.

Austin Currie

Ceist:

374 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 770 of 7 November 2000, he will state the relevant Departments and agencies he has had discussions with on the implementation of the recommendations of the report of the Victims Commission and the work which has already commenced on implementation in this area. [26632/00]

My Department has been involved in discussions on implementation of the recommendations of the report of the Victims' Commission with the Departments of Defence, Environment and Local Government, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Health and Children, Social, Community and Family Affairs and the Taoiseach and the Office of the Attorney General, in addition to the work on implementation ongoing within the Department.

The former Supreme Court Judge, Mr. Henry Barron, is taking forward the independent inquiries into the bombings in Dundalk and Monaghan in 1974 and Dundalk in 1975 which he recently took over from Mr. Liam Hamilton. The Govern ment has approved in principle the appointment of a suitable eminent legal person to inquire privately into the case of Mr. Séamus Ludlow, who was murdered in 1976.
Work has also commenced on implementation of other recommendations, such as the allocation of funding to provide counselling and to the mental health services and the taking into account of the report's recommendations on the criminal injuries compensation scheme in the context of a wider review of the scheme currently being undertaken by my Department.
