Vol. 526 No. 3

Written Answers. - Football Players Transfer System.

Ceist:

381 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if, further to his reply to Parliamentary Question Number 369 of 14 November 2000, he will write to the European Commission to outline the particular case of Ireland; and his views on the transfer of under-18 soccer players to clubs in the UK. [26638/00]

As outlined in my reply to the previous parliamentary question referred to by the Deputy, I intend to write to the European Commission to convey my wish that the outcome of the review under way on international transfers, including transfers to clubs in the UK, will: be to the benefit of the sport of soccer; ensure an equitable and fair transfer system for clubs and for players; and have regard, in particular, to the welfare of young players.

In advance of such a communication to the European Commission, my Department is in touch with the Football Association of Ireland to establish its position in relation to the review, including the issue of the international transfer of under 18 players.
