Vol. 526 No. 3

Written Answers. - Community Employment Schemes.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

156 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the anomaly in eligibility for community employment participation which vetoes participation by a deserted wife on lone parent allowance with no dependent children, whereas a widow with no dependent children is eligible; the plans she has to address this anomaly; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26292/00]

I extended eligibility to participate in the community employment, CE, programme to include widows-widowers in September, 1999. In addition, eligibility for CE was recently approved for persons on deserted wives' allowance and persons previously in receipt of carer's allowance. This is part of current policy which aims to provide a range of opportunities for women re-entering the workforce. All persons in receipt of the one parent family payment who fulfil the usual criteria are eligible for CE.
