Vol. 526 No. 3

Written Answers. - Price Controls.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

161 Mr. Haughey asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the reason price controls were abolished; if she will consider the re-introduction of such controls; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26671/00]

Basically, the strategy behind doing away with price controls reflects the view taken by all Governments over the last decade or so that inflation is best curbed and consumer interests are best served by the operation of competition in the marketplace. Experience, both in this country and internationally, supports this view. I have no plans to reintroduce price controls. Rather, I believe that our efforts should focus on promoting competition right across the Irish economy.
