Vol. 526 No. 5

Written Answers. - Farriery Training.

David Stanton

Ceist:

66 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if his Department or any other State agency provides grant aid and/or supports to people who wish to train as farriers; if so, if he will give details in this regard; the location of any such training establishments here; the plans he has to further develop the training of farriers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27160/00]

There is no direct grant aid or other support provided by my Department, or any State board operating under its aegis, to people who wish to train as farriers.

However, my Department has put forward a proposal in the context of the national development plan 2000-06 to make funding available to build and equip a farriery training school and to establish a register for qualified farriers here. This is one of a number of measures for the development of the horse industry for which EU approval has been sought.
