Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

75 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals he has to identify and diagnose the estimated 8,000 diabetes sufferers in the south east region who have not been diagnosed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27114/00]

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

82 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals he has to provide specialist services for diabetics at Waterford Regional Hospital (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27123/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 75 and 82 together.

The provision of medical treatment to eligible persons is, in this instance, the statutory responsibility of the South Eastern Health Board. The board has submitted an application for approval of the post of a consultant physician with special interest in endocrinology. This post will be considered in the context of the board's overall priorities and the development funding available for 2001.

I am currently awaiting the report of the task force which was established in response to the St. Vincent declaration to examine a range of issues relating to diabetes mellitus in Ireland. This report's recommendations will form the basis for an overall policy on this important public health issue.
