Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Air Incidents.

Noel O'Flynn

Ceist:

178 Mr. O'Flynn asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will obtain from the British authorities the number of incidents over the past two years in which Irish registered aircraft have been involved in near-miss incidents over British airspace; if her attention has been drawn to reports that over 1,000 near-miss incidents occurred over Britain in 1999; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that since 1 January 1998 at least two Cork-London flights (details supplied) had to abort landing at London-Heathrow airport due to other aircraft on the runway; and her views with regard to the safety of passengers aboard Irish-registered aircraft travelling eastwards from the State. [27258/00]

The type of incidents referred to by the Deputy are described officially as air proximity reports which are the reports made when two aircraft in flight breach the normal separation standards that are part of the air traffic control procedures. Air proximity incidents which occur in UK airspace are matters for the UK authorities, who comply with the highest international standards in airspace and aircraft operations. Neither I nor the Irish Aviation Authority have any reservations about Irish aircraft operating in UK airspace.
