Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fire Service.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

185 Ms Coughlan asked the Minister for Defence the steps he has taken to provide fire rescue services at Finner Camp, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27213/00]

The purchase of crash rescue equipment, including fire tenders, has been delegated to the military authorities since 1998.

When the issue of a fire tender for Finner Camp, County Donegal, was first brought to my attention in May last, I immediately instructed the military authorities to initiate the tender process to acquire the fire tender. I understand that the new fire tender is scheduled for delivery next March. In the interim, appropriate personnel in Finner Camp will receive suitable training so that the fire tender can become operational on delivery.

I further understand that the question of what interim arrangements should be made in the context of ensuring proper safety is under consideration by the military authorities.

At a meeting in early October 2000 I impressed on the military authorities, including the general officer commanding the Air Corps, that safety standards in both equipment and facilities are of paramount importance. I pointed out that funding is not an issue where safety is concerned. Funding is, and will continue to be, available to improve and modernise safety equipment. Safety standards are under continuous review by the military authorities. Any recommendations made on safety issues in the Army, Air Corps and Naval Service will be implemented without delay.
