Vol. 526 No. 6

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before dealing with the Order of Business, I have received notices of motions under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these two topics separately and I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I call Deputy Owen to state the matter of which she has given notice to me.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the extraordinarily lenient sentence of three years given to a man convicted of at least 31 counts of sexual abuse and assault on his daughter; and the need for this sentence to be appealed by the DPP, so that there is a strong indication of the seriousness with which these heinous crimes against a young girl should be handled by the State.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

I have also received notice from Deputy Joe Higgins. I call on Deputy Joe Higgins to state the matter of which he has given notice.

(Dublin West): I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the exposure to ever increasing numbers of workers of so-called social partnership agreements as merely a device to hold wages down while allowing profits, house prices and inflation to continue to rise inexorably, the consequent escalation of the number of workers seeking compensation through industrial action and the need to discuss a just remuneration for working people in light of the above.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
