Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Ceist:

289 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children the investigations he has made into the problem of deep vein thrombosis in long-haul airline passengers; the number of Irish cases in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27632/00]

My Department has not carried out any investigations into the problem of deep vein thrombosis in long haul airline passengers. I am advised that Aer Lingus has not come across any incidents of this particular problem with its long haul flights. The company is aware of some studies being carried out by one of its partners in the One World Alliance, British Airways, which has considerable experience with long haul flights. Aer Lingus is planning to include advice in their pre-flight information for passengers on preventative measures.
