Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Driving Instructor Register.

Donal Moynihan

Ceist:

322 Mr. D. Moynihan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the Driving Instructor Register continues to have his Department's support in view of a recent court case in relation to unfair dismissal and a meeting in Athlone where opposition was expressed. [27611/00]

Before funding was agreed for the voluntary Driving Instructor Register, DIR, in 1996, the register had to satisfy my Department that its organisation and structures would be capable of achieving and maintaining a high standard of driving instruction among its members. In order to become a qualified instructor under the scheme, it is necessary to pass a three part examination and be subject to regular review. The DIR also had to demonstrate that it had wide acceptance among driving instructors by showing that it had at least 300 members. I understand that 679 driving instructors have enrolled with the DIR to date.

In the context of the Government Strategy for Road Safety, 1998-2002, my Department has also provided additional assistance to the DIR which has enabled it to attain ISO 9002 certification. This quality certification is intended to enhance confidence in, and recognition of the DIR. In proposals which I announced on 14 December 1999 for the improved quality control and-or regulation of driving instruction, the creation of other recognised bodies, on the lines of DIR, is among the developments envisaged.
