Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

386 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the circumstances regarding the refusal to pay a higher education grant to a person (details supplied) in County Cork by the VEC grants office. [27364/00]

The person to whom the Deputy refers applied to County Cork Vocational Education Committee for grant assistance under the maintenance grants scheme for students attending ESF-aided post leaving certificate courses, 2000. In order to qualify for grant assistance under this scheme, a candidate must satisfy the relevant conditions pertaining to age, residence, means and nationality.

My officials have made enquiries with County Cork Vocational Education Committee regarding the candidate in question and it is understood that, as the reckonable income exceeds the relevant income limits attaching to the 2000 scheme, he is ineligible for grant assistance.

The terms and conditions of the student support schemes are of general application and, accordingly, it is not open to me to make exceptions in individual cases such as this.
