Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

409 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide space in St. Canice's school, Granges Road, County Kilkenny, or a pre-fab on the site for the educational needs of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; if a full assessment of the person will be carried out by his Department; if a special needs teacher and care assistant will be appointed; if he will give a timeframe for action in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27588/00]

My Department has received an application from the school in question for a pre-fab building to accommodate the delivery of resource teacher support for the child in question. Arrangements are being made for my Department's building unit to carry out a technical inspection at the school in the near future regard ing the siting of the pre-fab should one prove necessary.

My Department's inspectorate is currently investigating the level of resource teacher and special needs assistant support required by the child in question. On receipt of the inspectorate's report, my Department will be in further contact with the school authorities.

In the meantime, my Department has sanctioned nine hours home tuition per week for the child pending her placement in school.
