Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Northern Ireland Issues.

Ceist:

86 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on recent comments by the RUC Chief Constable, expressing support for proposals that members of the RUC should be allowed to enter this jurisdiction during hot pursuit in attempting to apprehend criminals. [27572/00]

I assume that the Deputy is referring to remarks made by the Chief Constable at a conference on European cross-border cooperation held last month at Queen's University Belfast. The Chief Constable is reported as having said that he would welcome the introduction of legislation which would permit the RUC and Garda Síochána to pursue criminals across the Border into each others jurisdictions. I understand these remarks were made in response to questions from the floor, and were not part of his original address to the conference.

As the Deputy will be aware, there has been for many years ongoing and effective co-operation between law enforcement agencies on both sides of the Border, and this is kept under review. However, it has been felt neither necessary nor desirable to permit law enforcement agencies from one part of the island to operate in the other jurisdiction, and this continues to be the position.
