Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Forestry Act.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

138 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the progress to date in preparing the promised revision of the Forestry Act, 1946. [27546/00]

With the passage of time the procedures contained in the Forestry Act, 1946, have become cumbersome and require to be made more effective and efficient.

As part of a wide-ranging consultative procedure, the views of relevant organisations and groups were invited on the strengths and weaknesses of the current legislation from their per spective, the basic philosophy which should underpin any amended legislation, measures or principles which they consider necessary or desirable in any modified law and any other forestry related observations which they consider relevant.
A review group was set up to consider the submissions received. It was also found necessary to form subcommittees covering a number of specialised areas. I expect to receive the report of the review group by next spring and to be in a position to put together draft heads of a bill later in the year.
