Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

131 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of residency application received from asylum applicants on the basis of an Irish-born child or marriage to an EU citizen or resident in respect of the period from 1 January 1996 until 31 October 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28023/00]

During the period 1 January 1996 to 31 October 2000 permission to remain was granted to 2,111 current or former asylum seekers on the basis of their parentage of an Irish born child. A total of 1,129 cases are outstanding. Many of these cases relate to applications from two non-national parents.

During the period 1 January 1999 to 31 October 2000 permission to remain was granted to 102 current or former asylum seekers on the basis of their marriage to an EU national. A total of 113 applications are outstanding. Comparable figures are not readily available for the period 1 January 1996 to 31 December 1998.
