Vol. 527 No. 1

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

145 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will make a higher education grant available to a person (details supplied) in County Cork in view of the circumstances of this case. [27931/00]

WThe student to whom the Deputy refers was awarded a bachelor of arts degree from University College Cork in 1985. In the 2000/2001 academic year this student entered the first year of a national diploma course in architectural technology, construction studies at Cork Institute of Technology. She submitted an application for grant assistance to County Cork VEC, under the terms of the scheme applicable to such a course, the third level maintenance grants scheme for trainees, 2000.

This scheme has a clause to the effect that candidates are ineligible for grant assistance if they already hold a degree. Accordingly, the student in question is not eligible for grant assistance under the terms of the scheme as she already holds a degree.

The terms and conditions of the student support schemes are of general application and, accordingly, it is not open to me to make exceptions in individual cases such as this.
