Vol. 527 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

61 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the extent to which her Department is and has been involved in proposals to roll out new rail infrastructure in Cork; if her Department has had an input into the joint study commissioned by Cork County Council and Cork Corporation regarding the future of the greater Cork area 2001-2020; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [27842/00]

Rail developments in the Cork area are currently being considered by consultants who have been engaged by Cork Corporation and Cork County Council to draw up the Cork Strategic Plan 2000-2020. My Department is represented on an advisory group which is assisting with the development of the plan. I am informed that the strategy being adopted by the consultants accords, in principle, with my position on the development of major public transport projects. I believe that such projects are best considered when they are developed in line with appropriate land use planning policy and practice so that the appropriate scale of project is put in place to justify the capital and ongoing operating costs.

Question No. 62 taken with Question No. 40.
