Vol. 527 No. 1

Written Answers. - Compensation Payments.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

80 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the reason no reply has been issued to correspondence to his Department dated 1 November 2000, in relation to a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath; if he will ensure appropriate steps are taken to guarantee the person receives appropriate compensation for his losses; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27851/00]

I understand the issue involved relates to compensation in respect of three cattle aged over 30 months which were exported from here and were presented for under 30 month slaughter at a meat plant in Northern Ireland on 25 October. In the UK, animals aged over 30 months are not allowed enter the food chain.

The question of compensation is a matter between the person concerned, the meat plant and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Northern Ireland. I regret I have no function in the matter. The delay in replying to the Deputy's letter of 1 November is regretted.
