Vol. 527 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

95 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works has carried out any investigations into the recent severe flooding at various locations throughout north Kildare, including Leixlip, Maynooth, Celbridge/ Hazelhatch, Straffan, Clane and Kilcock with particular reference to the need to produce a report into the cause or causes and early remedial action to prevent a reoccurrence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28124/00]

The Office of Public Works has prepared a localised flood relief scheme for the Shinkeen Stream, which will alleviate flooding at Hazelhatch, Celbridge, County Kildare, and this scheme is currently at public exhibition. The Office of Public Works, however, have not carried out any drainage schemes in the Leixlip, Maynooth, Celbridge, Straffan, Clane or Kilcock areas of north Kildare and consequently have no responsibility for maintenance of rivers in those areas. The Office of Public Works will, however, provide whatever support is requested by the local authority in carrying out its responsibilities to relieve flooding.
