Vol. 527 No. 2

Written Answers. - Passport Applications.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

70 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6 who initially held a passport for a ten year period from 1996 has now been issued with a replacement passport valid for only three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28062/00]

This person applied for a new passport on 21 November 2000 and reported that his previous passport, which was valid until December 2006, had been stolen.

When a valid passport is reported lost or stolen the Passport Office normally restricts to one year the period of validity of a new passport in case the one lost or stolen is recovered, as often happens.

In cases such as this, where the Passport Office is made aware that one year passports would not be sufficient for the holders' intended travels abroad, exceptions are made. A three year passport was therefore issued to this person on 27 November 2000.
If, after the three years have elapsed, the original passport has not been recovered, a new passport valid for a further seven years will be issued without payment of any further fee.
