Information from the National Intellectual Disability Database indicates that in April 1999 the numbers of new places required in the period 2000 to 2004 to meet the needs of those who had been assessed as requiring placements in the residential and day services were 1,677 residential and 912 day care. The breakdown between the various health boards is set out below. It should be noted that, as the data relate to April 1999, they do not reflect the full impact of the 1999 development programme or developments to date in the year 2000. During this period around 700 residential and 900 day places were provided.
