Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

John Perry

Ceist:

262 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans he has to provide an acute psychiatric admission unit at Letterkenny General Hospital, County Donegal; the discussions he has had in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28638/00]

The provision of services at Letterkenny General Hospital is the statutory responsibility of the North Western Health Board in the first instance.

I have been informed by the North Western Health Board that the existing acute psychiatric admission unit was built at Letterkenny General Hospital in 1980. Plans are now at an advanced stage for the upgrading and refurbishment of this unit and it is hoped to begin this work in 2001.

Ceist:

263 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans he has to provide a geriatric nursing unit for the town of Letterkenny, County Donegal; the discussions he has had in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28639/00]

The provision of health services in County Donegal is the responsibility of the North Western Health Board. The board has informed me that it is the intention to provide a community hospital for residents in the Letterkenny area and is considering the matter as part of the overall development of the facility on the St. Conal's campus. Progress on this proposed development is a matter for consideration by the North Western Health Board in the light of the availability of capital funding and the board's other priorities for the development of services for older people. My Department will be holding discussions with officials of the board early in the new year in relation to its capital priorities on services for older people.
