Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

John Browne

Ceist:

268 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will have investigations made into the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny who travelled from Tralee, County Kerry, to Kilkenny for a driving test which was cancelled. [28808/00]

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

286 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if, in view of the circumstances detailed in correspondence attached with regard to a driving test arranged for a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny, he will arrange to have the matter fully examined and a report made available at the earliest possible date. [28536/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 268 and 286 together.

The person concerned was scheduled to take the driving test on 20 April 2000 at 3.15 p.m. in the Kilkenny driving test centre. Regrettably, traffic conditions and road works in the area of the test centre on that day resulted in a loss of time to the schedule such that the person's test could not be carried out. Tests were scheduled in the test centre at 45 minute intervals. The driver tester completed the scheduled 2.30 p.m. test at approximately 3.40 p.m. and conducted his next test at 4 p.m. I understand that the driver tester explained the reasons for not conducting the test to the candidate and that a further early test in either Tralee or Kilkenny was offered.

The candidate accepted the offer of a test in Kilkenny on 20 May 2000. The person concerned does not appear to have been in communication with my Department following this latter test, which was passed. Some recompense for expenses can be considered by my Department in circumstances where a test is not conducted without fault of the applicant, provided the applicant submits a request.
